When someone is incapacitated or dies, their family typically faces locked phones, two-factor prompts sent to unreachable devices, and support departments that (correctly) refuse to hand over access. The Emergency access template starts you off: password manager and master password, phone PIN, email account, bank access, people to contact. Keep it to the master keys — the things that unlock everything else.
Use a passphrase your spouse knows or your lawyer holds in a sealed note (passphrase mode stores nothing anywhere), or protect it with a key that you print or export separately and deposit with your lawyer or in a safe deposit box. With the key held apart from the envelope, neither document alone reveals anything.
The document is encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM — the plaintext never leaves your device — and comes out as QR codes on paper. Add a one-page plain-language instruction sheet: "scan these codes at this address, enter the passphrase, follow the steps."

Several password managers offer emergency contacts or legacy access, and if you use one, turn it on — it is a good mechanism. Its limits: it covers only what is in that vault, requires your survivors to navigate an unfamiliar app and account-recovery process under stress, and depends on the vendor still operating and the subscription still active. A printed envelope is vendor-independent and works by candlelight.
Lawyers are good at holding envelopes — but a plaintext list is readable by anyone who handles it along the way. The stronger pattern: the lawyer holds the sealed passphrase note or printed key, your family holds the encrypted document (or vice versa). Access requires deliberately bringing the two together.
Decryption needs two things: the printed QR codes and the passphrase or key.
